Matakana Skincare is a natural New Zealand skincare company. After purchasing the business, the new owners approached us to completely overhaul the brand and help reposition it for their expansion into high-end department and cosmetic stores overseas. Alongside formulation changes, the new brand aesthetic needed to position Matakana Skincare as a premium product commanding a high price-point.
To achieve the desired feeling of an all natural skincare brand that embodied femininity and elegance, the design approach features a serif typeface and a soft sage colour across all products. For the packaging, we developed a design system that works consistently across a range of bottles and boxes. Print embellishments such as embossing and foiling gives a premium, tactile feel, elevating the customer experience.
As part of our ideation, we also developed a range of ‘Skin Systems’ which adopt a product numbering method to personalise a product combination best suited to a customer’s skin concern such as hydration or dullness. Eight different sub-brands have been created for each of these systems as part of the signature range, providing an easy and convenient purchase solution for customers while also helping increase basket size for the brand.
